After only one season on The Real Housewives of Orange County, Lydia McLaughlin is calling it quits. The 32-year-old mother of two will not be returning for Season 9 of RHOC. “It’s bittersweet,” McLaughlin told US Weekly. “I compare it to breaking up with a boyfriend you know you’re not going to end up with — it’s hard, but overall you know you’re doing the right thing.”
I can’t help but feel that we the viewers are the poor, scorned ex in this metaphor! Lydia was a breath of fresh air, in my opinion, for the OC franchise and I was looking forward to a seeing her on season 9 and beyond! Chalk it up to just another story of unrequited love, I suppose…*sigh.
Lydia assures us that there is “no epic story” or feud behind her decision to leave the show. Typical. The old “it’s not you it’s me” line. Sheesh.
“I never wanted to make a career out of being a housewife. That’s never really been a dream of mine,” Lydia explained. She also confirmed that producers did ask her back, so this is not one of those “you didn’t fire me I quit” scenarios a la Danielle Staub.
But, wait, is there still a glimmer of hope, Bravo/Lydia fans?? It appears that Lydia hasn’t ruled out a potential return to reality TV. As seen on Season 8 of RHOC, Lydia and her husband Doug own Beverly Hills Lifestyle magazine. “I definitely have plans to continue to sparkle fairy dust and be a light! I want to develop our own reality show about our magazine and all the glitz and glamour involved with publishing it.” Remember when they wouldn’t put Heather’s house on the cover? Watching Lydia and Doug tell people they aren’t famous enough for their magazine covers could make for entertaining television! You listening, Andy?
Lydia told Wetpaint that she wants to focus on her jewelry business and the magazine for now AND that she wants to have another baby. She didn’t rule out the possibility of returning to the show either citing Dina Manzo’s return to RHONJ as evidence that it’s a possibility for the future.
As for keeping in touch with her now ex-costars? “I still see Alexis and Gretchen,” she says. “Ironically they’re not on the show anymore!” Andy Cohen tried to shrug that rumor off in the latest @sk Andy segment but I guess we can go ahead and consider it confirmed now.
And when asked if she will watch season 9, Lydia isn’t so sure. “I feel like because I did have such a great experience with it, I would be sad to watch it,” she mused. “It’d be like seeing your ex-boyfriend with a new girl! I’m really grateful for the opportunity!” Well Lydia, if you don’t want us then we certainly will be moving on to a new girl (probably a few new girls, in fact!) That leaves us with only Vicki, Tamra & Heather returning for season 9 at this point. Here’s hoping Bravo can hook us up with some sexy, smart, funny, stylish ladies to help us get over this difficult breakup.
How do you feel about Lydia leaving?
