It looks like producers may be scrambling to come up with an alternate storyline for The Real Housewives of New Jersey’s 6th Season. After already having shuffled filming around in order to be able to capture the Giudice fraud trial, the trial date has been moved…again. Here’s a brief timeline for you:
Originally, when Teresa and Joe were arraigned on 39 counts of fraud in August 2013, the trial date was set to start October 8, 2013. Bravo was reportedly hustling to get filming started in time but then, in September, the trial date got pushed back to February 24, 2014. Why? because Joe Giudice had a conflict—his other trial. (For forging documents to get a drivers license.) As a result, Bravo shifted filming back as well. Filming for RHONJ typically starts in the fall but this year it didn’t start until early December. I’m sure producers wanted to capture some touching scenes with the Giudices celebrating what could be their last holiday season together as a family for quite a few years (if found guilty one or both of them could be going away for up to 30 years) and then roll into the trial as the season climaxes. According to Radar Online, “The producers want to get the Christmas holidays in the show because that always brings the drama but Teresa’s court problems are what they really want. They think that people will want to tune in to find out how she dealt with court and that it will be ratings gold for them.”
Ratings gold. Good plan.
That was until the trial date got pushed back again. This time, until sometime in April (an official trial date has not yet been released).
“They won’t get anything this season,” a source close to production told Radar Online, referring to film coverage of the trial.
“Now all they’ll get is Teresa talking about how she’s just trying to stay positive for her family,” the source said.
So, it looks like the trial will not be a part of RHONJ Season 6. I still feel like there’s no way Bravo will not be bringing coverage of the trial to the millions of interested viewers who would certainly help revitalize the franchise. I could see them running a special coverage piece or even some type of Housewives spinoff. The only problem with that theory is that, reportedly, Teresa never wanted the trial filmed for the show. So, getting her to sign on for anything outside of her existing contract could be difficult. But, who knows, we know she loves the money and fame so I wouldn’t count it out just yet.
What do you think…are you disappointed that The Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 6 will most likely not feature coverage of the Giudice trial?
