Where to begin with Ramona Singer? I find her to be one of the most fascinating personalities on Bravo. She is, of course, one of the original Real Housewives of New York City, but she isn’t your average housewife.
If you’ve ever heard of Ramona Singer you have probably also heard about Turtle Time and her
addiction obsession with Pinot Grigio. In case you missed the episode where Ramona first uttered the those two little alliterative words, I figured I’d fill you in on how that catch phrase came to be. “Turtle Time,” was a phrase that Ramona used during RHONY Season 3 when the gals took a trip down to “Scary Island,” aka St. John island. The phrase came up after a boat party when a Pinot-enjoying Ramona wanted to keep the celebrations going at a nearby bar called Fat Turtle. Swiveling her glass of Pinot and saying “turtle time” was simply Ramona’s way of letting everyone know that they should head to Fat Turtle. Since then, though, “Turtle Time” has taken on a more generic meaning. According to Ramona’s Bravo blog, it just means “cutting loose, having some Pinot Grigio and even dancing.” Sounds like a good time to me!
You may also know Ramona for her kinda crazy eyes:
Andy Cohen even memorialized her eyes as a sleep mask which is used regularly during games on Watch What Happens Live:
Ramona Singer was born November 18, 1956 in South Hampton, New York. She is the eldest of four children and has been open about her troubled childhood during which time she witnessed her mother’s abuse by her father. She attended college at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York where, despite her father telling her he didn’t want to waste any more money on her because he said she would just wind up getting married and having kids, she took out loans and worked her way through school to earn a BS in business.
After graduating, Ramona became a buyer for Macy’s until she started her own company, RMS Fashions, at the age of 29. In the apparel industry, Ramona is known as a jobber – a middleman whom manufacturers sell their surplus fabric to. Ramona also created her own skin care line, Tru Renewal, as well as her line of Ramona Singer Jewelry for the Home Shopping Network. Her other businesses include (along with husband Mario) True Faith Jewelry and the Ramona Singer Collection on Amazon. Ramona’s net worth is reported to be around $18 million.
Ramona married Mario Singer in 1992 and they have one daughter, Avery, who was born November 22, 1994. Avery started this fall at Emory College in Atlanta, Georgia. I’m sure we’ll be seeing some touching mother-daughter moments next season on RHONY! This year, the Singer family has been the source of a lot of tabloid scandal with cheating allegations surrounding Mario. Reports go so far as to allege Mario had an affair and impregnated a young New York socialite. Despite such claims, Ramona and Mario appear to be sticking it out. Only a few weeks ago, Ramona and Mario took a trip down to Atlanta together to visit Avery. They still look like a pretty happy family to me!
Still no word about when The Real Housewives of New York Season 6 will air but we know it’s been filmed and that Ramona is still a member of the cast. Can’t wait for more Turtle Time with Ramona!
