Bravo fans have known Heather “fancy pants” Dubrow since her Season 7 Real Housewives of Orange County debut. RHOC fans also know that Housewives was not Heather’s first experience on television. Not by a long shot.
Heather Dubrow was born Heather Paige Kent on January 5, 1969 in the Bronx and grew up in Chappaqua, located in New York’s upscale Westchester County. She is Jewish, a fifth generation American of Russian, Polish and Austrian descent. After graduating High School, Heather attended Syracuse University, where, in 1990, she earned her BFA in musical theater.
FUN FACT: Heather is a former beauty queen! Representing as Miss Greater Syracuse in 1989, she was named Miss Congeniality at that year’s Miss New York State Pageant. Move over Sandra Bullock!
Heather has said she had planned to pursue a career on Broadway but took a trip out to California for a TV audition and (thankfully, for RHOC fans) she never left!
Pre-Housewives Acting Credits
Heather’s first TV appearance came in 1991 as a guest on the ABC sitcom Baby Talk. Next, she appeared in an episode of Fox’s Married With Children in 1994. Heather went on to make appearances and brief recurring roles on shows like Nowhere Man, Life With Roger, Men Behaving Badly, and Chicago Sons before landing a lead role as Jenny McCarthy’s best friend on her show Jenny in 1997. The show was short lived; it was cancelled in 1998, but this awesome trailer still landed itself in YouTube infamy!
Heather made more short role appearances on Early Edition and The Norm Show before landing her next regular gig in 1999 on Stark Raving Mad as bartender Maddie Keller. Despite winning a People’s Choice Award, this sitcom was also short-lived–getting the network ax in 2000.
Finally, Heather got what seemed to be her big break in 2000, earning a starring role in the hour-long CBS dramedy That’s Life about a non-mafia Italian family in New Jersey co-starring Paul Sorvino, Ellen Burstyn, and Kevin Dillon.
Unfortunately, That’s Life didn’t make it either and was cancelled in 2002. Not to worry, Heather was about to embark on the most important role of her life: mommy.
Heather met plastic surgeon Terry Dubrow on a blind date and joked, of their first meeting, “It was love at first sight…for him!” The couple married in 1999. In 2003, Heather gave birth to their twins, Nicholas and Maximillia (Nicky and Max for short). This is about the time she began her “radical sabbatical” from acting and devoted herself to full-time mommy-hood. She and Terry had two more children, Katarina and (“surprise!”) Collette.
Despite all of her professional success, Heather says she is most proud of her role as mother to her 4 children and wife to Terry.
Real Housewives of Orange County
Heather happened upon her current starring role by chance. She said “I was at Evolution media (who produces the show) pitching a different show and they approached me to be on RHOC.” The rest, as they say, was history! Heather joined veteran cast members Vicki, Tamra, Gretchen and Alexis as the new girl on Season 7. Viewers were introduced to Heather when Tamra (who, for a second there, seemed eager to get her real estate business back up and running) met up with her to show a building site for the new home Heather and Terry were thinking about building. Despite what Gretchen later described as some friendly hazing early on, it was quickly apparent that Heather would have no problem holding her own. It’s always fun to look back on Housewives’ introduction videos; here’s Heather’s:
Over the next two seasons, we saw Heather develop friendships with some of her costars, especially Tamra. She acted as a bridesmaid in Tamra’s recent wedding to Eddie Judge, appearing also on the spinoff: Tamra’s OC Wedding. Heather has had her share of personality conflicts with the other women as well–she faulted Alexis Bellino for being fake and butted heads with Season 8 addition Lydia McLaughlin over her refusal to give the Dubrow home the cover of her magazine.
Heather famously loves champagne, which she dubs “champs”. Bravo even immortalized her drink of choice:
Heather’s Season 7 storyline culminated in the finale episode when she celebrated formally changing her name to Dubrow. You may watching the Game of Thrones-like battle I’ve dubbed “Cake Gate”, after a sloppy drunk friend of Gretchen’s stuck a finger in Heather’s fancy (read: expensive) cake, then refused to leave the party.
Since becoming a Housewife, Heather decided to get back into acting and landed guest roles in Malibu Country, Hot in Cleveland, and, most recently, Hawaii Five-O. Her Season 8 storyline had a lot to do with these roles as she played he-said-she-said with Gretchen over Malibu Country roles and RHOC filmed at her appearance on Hot in Cleveland. Her decision to return to scripted TV also put a strain on her marriage, with Terry not picking up the familial slack to her satisfaction. By the end of Season 8, however, the pair seemed to have completely reconciled and wrap up by revealing that they’ve sold their mansion and are building their next dream home together.
Heather will appear in The Real Housewives of Orange County Season 9 and we can’t wait to see where she’s at when the show returns!
