For many of us, embarking on a new year means a clean slate, an opportunity to start fresh, develop healthier habits, set goals and, overall, feel optimistic about the future. After a busy holiday season full of giving thanks, reconnecting with our nearest and dearest, and reflecting on the year behind us, (not to mention a few too many sugar cookies, helpings of pumpkin pie, and glasses of “champs”), January is a great time to hit the reset button. And so it is with TV, too.
2013 was a great year for Bravo TV fans. From Oprah and Lady Gaga on Watch What Happens Live to four televised Housewives weddings, Bravo really brought it.
So, what’s Bravo going to do next to top 2013? You can bet they have plans to make 2014 their best year yet. Here’s how I predict that’s going to happen:
1) More epic guests on Watch What Happens Live. Let’s face it, Andy Cohen is the public face of Bravo TV. The more he hangs with A-listers, the better the network comes across overall. At the top of my wishlist for 2014 WWHL guests is the iconic Ms. Britney Spears. If you caught the I’m Britney Jean documentary, you know that Andy made an appearance:
Let’s hope Britney has time to return the favor when she’s not performing her Piece of Me show in Vegas.
I’d also love to see Stephen Colbert make a stop by the club house. And, I think there’s a real possibility of this happening for a couple of reasons. First of all, anyone remember when Andy appeared on The Colbert Report as Stephen’s “perceptive gay best friend”? Here’s the clip (fast forward to minute 3):
Andy was also on Colbert in 2010 and he when he and Stephen did a hilarious rendition of some vintage RHONY drama:
Additionally, Stephen Colbert is close friends with Amy Sedaris, who we know is a WWHL regular and fan favorite. So, come on Stephen, Andy’s been on your show twice. Time to return the favor. And, hey, there’s plenty of Tripple Sec to be had in the Bravo Clubhouse!
Who would you like to see on Watch What Happens Live in 2014?
2) Great new shows. In 2013, there was a lot of new programming on Bravo. Some great, some not so great, and many that we’re still waiting to find out if they’ll have a second chance at greatness. There were too many to recap here but topping my new shows list is Vanderpump Rules, which debuted its first season January 7, 2013. We’re now well into its second run and still going strong. Fashion Queens is also in its second season and deserving of a spot on the best-of-new-in-2013 list. Below Deck was another great new addition which will be getting a second season sometime in 2014. And, no year of Bravo programming would be complete without a little bit of controversy! I probably get asked most about the possibility for season 2 of two controversial new series: Married to Medicine and Princesses: Long Island.
Bravo is kicking off 2014 with three brand new series all premiering this week. Toned Up premieres Thursday, January 2 @ 10:30. I’ll definitely be tuning in and (hopefully) toning up with Katrina and Karena, who I am counting on to inspire me to stick with my get-healthier resolutions! Next up, Blood, Sweat & Heels, steps up Bravo’s style and sass beginning Sunday, January 5 @ 9pm and follows six movers-and-shakers as they navigate New York City’s elite circles of real estate, fashion and media. And finally, steaming up the cold winter season is 100 Days of Summer debuting Tuesday, January 7 @ 10pm.
Other new series I’m excited for include a rumored Dr. V spinoff series and a new Housewives-style show, Ladies of London, which was greenlit way back in April. It follows British socialites and American expats enjoying the upper crust of high society. Not sure why we haven’t heard anymore about this one since it was announced but it sounds like a winner to me!
And, finally, we’re still anxiously awaiting the launch of Bravo’s much-anticipated scripted series! That was supposed to happen in 2013 but, at this point, the network doesn’t seem to be in any rush. Still, I’d guess we see something on this front in 2014.
3) Housewives, Housewives and more Housewives! No Bravo predictions list would be complete without mention of the Real Housewives seasons to come. The Housewives franchise is still the bread and butter of Bravo TV and, without more success stories like Shahs of Sunset to add to the mix, I see no other shows rivaling Housewives in the network’s near future. So, which Housewives can we expect back in 2014?
First and foremost, we know the long-awaited return of The Real Housewives of New York City is happening, hopefully soon. So far, all we know is “coming 2014” but I’m guessing we’ll get a more concrete announcement very soon (as in, I would bet during one of the three premieres that is happening this week). Sonja Morgan dished on what we can expect from RHONY Season 6 in our recent interview! We’ve also heard about a new Housewife and plenty of new drama so it should be a triumphant return for our favorite Big Apple ladies.
The Real Housewives of Orange County will return for Season 9, likely in the Spring. There has been a lot of buzz lately about who is being added to the cast since Gretchen and Alexis were reportedly fired and Lydia quit. We know for sure that Tamra, Vicki and Heather are back and already filming and two newbies seem pretty well confirmed: Shannon Beador and Elizabeth Rovsek. My best guess: look for a RHOC Season 9 announcement in March or April.
The Real Housewives of New Jersey are currently filming for Season 6 but there’s been a pretty big hiccup in the production plans. The Joe and Teresa Giudice fraud trial, which was supposed to be a big part of the storyline, has been delayed and now will not start until April. This means no trial on RHONJ Season 6. I’m not too worried about it, however. Afterall, somehow Teresa and crew has been able to entertain us for 5 seasons without anyone going to jail so I’m sure they (with help from newbie twins) can do it again.
The future of The Real Housewives of Miami is a little bit up in the air at this point. After 3 seasons of lackluster ratings, I’m betting Bravo is looking for a way to liven it up. There’s even been rumors of some of the cast jumping ship in favor of joining next season’s Real Housewives of Beverly Hills cast. There has also been talk about RHOM being cancelled altogether. I would still bet on Season 4 with a major casting shakeup but who knows. Alexia Echevvaria certainly seemed to be looking forward to Season 4 when we last spoke!
As you know, The Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 6 and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 4 are currently airing. Atlanta is the most-watched installment within the franchise and Beverly Hills ratings, while not stellar, seem to be holding pretty steady so I’m expecting both RHOA Season 7 and RHOBH Season 5 late in 2014. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see NeNe Leakes get a full spinoff after the success of I Dream of NeNe: The Wedding. Hmm…must delve more into that possibility soon!
As you can see, 2014 should be another great year for Bravo TV and for us, the fans! On that note, I’d like to say a quick THANKS to all of you for making 2013 such a great year for BravoWatch! 2013 was our first full year and we’ve grown by leaps and bounds. And, with such an entertaining 2014 Bravo lineup we’re expecting even greater growth in the year to come!
Happy New Year Bravo Watchers!
